Roelof Temmingh with Redmond Sanders & Lucie Curé  8th August 2022 St. Mary’s Church Map

Roelof Temmingh is a Junior Fellow from the Royal College of Music.  He is joined by singers from the College in a programme he has devised featuring music which resonates with our theme of Family Relationships.  Brahms Vier Ernste Gesänge were the last songs that the composer wrote and they are deeply infused with a metaphysical awareness of mortality, his dearest friend Clara Schumann having recently suffered a debilitating stroke.  Clara’s Romanze dates from 1853, the year that she met Brahms for the first time.

Robert Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und -leben was written in his inspired ‘year of song’ 1840, the year when he finally married his beloved Clara.  It sets poems by Adelbert von Chamisso, written ten years earlier and can be seen as a portrait of European society’s views of womanhood in the 1830s.

The recital also includes a song cycle by Roelof’s father, the distinguished South African composer, also called Roelof Temmingh.  The multiple threads of family connections are woven into a fascinating programme, a tapestry of song.                                                                                                        Richard Sisson
